Completed in 2012, the rear extension to this semi-detached villa on North Deeside Road, Peterculter presented an interesting challenge. The garden sloped away to the rear and the narrow plot width demanded an innovative flat-roof design to avoid starving light from the existing house. Our design solution has transformed the family’s living arrangements. Their new garden room is flooded with light from the generous windows which open on to a new paved area.
The existing kitchen was upgraded and relocated to the extension where there it has become a social hub. A cosy study area with ample built-in shelving and sliding doors has been sandwiched cleverly between the new kitchen, garden and utility rooms. The new stairs providing the link from the existing house to the extension utilise the original granite exterior wall as a delightful internal feature, successfully blending old with new. A traditional wood burning stove in the garden room and under-floor heating throughout ensure a comfortable year-round temperature.
