£15m research laboratory and office building for the University of Aberdeen completed in 2 phases. This commission was won in competition partly due to the green approach to design which maximised natural ventilation and high daylight levels.
The concept was for a research ‘hotel’ where research teams might expand and contract depending on funding availability. Flexibility was one of the main priorities. The design is based on a unique arrangement of double height labs flanked by double stacked offices and write up areas. The lofty central atrium provides the major spatial feature and social hub for the building. IMS is also the largest medical campus in Europe.
